Counselor Corner

Welcome! I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself, my name is Laura Layton and I am the school counselor for TRCS. I am so happy to be here and to be part of such a wonderful school and community.

SERVICES

As a school counselor, my primary responsibility is to promote the academics, social & emotional learning, and college, career and life readiness of all students. I am working to create a comprehensive, developmental counseling program that is aligned with the American School Counselor Association’s National Model. Contact with students occurs via whole group instruction in advisory and health classrooms, small groups as needed, and individually for short-term support.

  • Character Strong: Research has shown that education emphasizing social-emotional learning (SEL) has a positive impact on attendance, behavior, course performance, and healthy relationships. Character Strong curricula, facilitated for all students in heath and advisory classes, focuses on fostering the whole child with lessons to develop thoughtful, healthy, and kind human beings.
  • Lunch Bunch: Small group counseling is offered based on needs within the TRCS community. Lunch Bunches meet in mixed grade levels (4/5 and 6/7/8) once per week for about 25 minutes at lunch/recess during the school day. Typically, sessions begin in October, January, and April for six weeks at a time. Students are given the opportunity to reflect on their experiences, develop coping strategies, improve self-awareness, and connect with their peers in the group. We commonly use games, art, music, modeling, role play, and books along with discussion to practice these skills.

While the role of the school counselor is not to diagnose or provide therapy, care is provided to help students overcome problems that impact their school performance. Confidentiality is respected unless the student plans on hurting themselves, hurting someone else or someone is hurting them.  I believe children’s mental health is essential for success in school, and meet with parents, collaborate with teachers and staff, and consult with community organizations to benefit TRCS students.

EDUCATION

My twenty-year career in education includes school administration and counseling, with students and families in early childhood through higher education environments. I have a Bachelor of Arts with a dual major in psychology and communication from SUNY Fredonia, and a Master of Science in higher education administration with a focus in counseling from Buffalo State College. I completed post-graduate coursework towards a Pupil Personnel Services credential at Saint Mary’s College of California and hold a school counselor license through Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC).
